My little brother turned 42 this weekend. Yesterday, we celebrated. When we built this home, I envisioned gatherings around the kitchen island and for the last 4 years, we have. My Dad always said ~ should’ve been bigger. We still laugh as he was always right.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. We love having one big open area so we can all be together at once. No walls separating us. The birthday person in our family always dictates the meal. Bub loves my homemade spaghetti so that is what we had. He also requested deep fried pickles. Never have I made them before yesterday. They turned out well. Except now, my house smells like grease. Yuck. The bruschetta came from Miss M’s tomatoes out of her raised bed garden. And man was it delicious.
I always put my cheese ball in a pie plate. It is so much easier to serve and put away if there is any left over, which rarely that happens. Besides, I can never get it in the perfectly formed ball like seen in photos.
The menu last night consisted of:
- Brushetta
- Veggies & Dip
- Chips & Dip
- Salmon
- Cheese Ball
- Crackers
- Smoked Gouda
- Salami Bites
- Deep Fried Pickles
- Green Olives
- Spaghetti
- Garlic Toast
- Birthday Cake &
- Deep Fried Ice Cream
I won’t lie, after every one had went home, I cried. I cried because as our year of firsts without Daddy here I feel the void. He loved it here. Every where I look, I see him. As GW held me I heard through my sobs that he too misses him just as badly and that he thinks of him all the time and thankful that what we have is because of Daddy. and all the work he put into our property. It truly is a masterpiece. I’ll share photos of that some day.
Today, I am tired and my kitchen is in desperate need of attention. At least the sink is anyway. And when I clean up the aftermath, I will thank Jesus for the blessings of abundance in family, friends who are family, the food, the drink, the house and the mess.
~ XOXO
